2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Health and Safety Issues Surrounding the Construction Work

The soccer fans must follow the news regarding the international soccer tournament that is the FIFA World Cup. Everybody knows that the upcoming ones will be held in 2018 and in 2022. Those will take place in Russia and in Qatar, respectively. The latest controversy surrounding the FIFA World Cup is the one about the construction work in Qatar.

After the corruption issue, the next one is about the FIFA World Cup construction work in Qatar. The latest rumor has it that Qatar holds a very poor standard of worker’s rights and safety. It is noted that since the Middle Eastern country won the bid of 2022 FIFA World Cup in 2010, the deaths of the migrant workers have reached the number of 1,200 people. Although it is hard to know how many of that deaths directly related to the World Cup, per se, but still the construction of the stadiums and the infrastructure of the country to host the soccer world tournament definitely worsen the number. If it keeps going like that, it is estimated that by 2022, the worker deaths in Qatar will reach up to 4,000 people.

The International Trade Union Confederation once called Qatar as “a country without a conscience.” Numbers of investigation done by journalists disclose that the safety standards in the construction sites are so poor. That goes for the conditions of the migrant workers as well. It is said the workers are denied their rights; their important papers are taken away, and either they are paid late or not at all. They are even denied for food and water. Even with all the controversies, the fact that Qatar will be the host of the 22nd FIFA World Cup in 2022 hasn’t changed at all.
