SAD stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects more women than men. People who experience long winters are also at greater risk for this disorder.
Symptoms include:
- Increased appetite, sleep, and daytime sleepiness
- Loss of energy and loss of interest in work/activities
- Increased unhappiness, irritability and social withdrawal
There is no definitive test for SAD. However, treatments such as antidepressant medication and “talk therapy” can be effective. Taking long walks during daylight hours, sitting near skylights or windows during the day, and getting plenty of exercise alleviates symptoms in many people. Light therapy using a special light box at home or at work is also a common treatment option. Always speak with your physician prior to trying new therapies.
