Falls can have devastating effects. Every year, one in three Canadian seniors will fall at least once.
What can cause a fall?
- Cluttered hallways and steps
- Extension cords
- Lack of safety rails in stairwells
- Lack of safety equipment in bathrooms (grab bar, non-slip mats in and around the bathtub)
- Balance issues
- Certain medications
- Decreased hearing or vision
- Memory loss
What can you do to help prevent falls?
Use the STOP method
- Scan: Look around and identify potential hazards in and outside your home
- Talk: Share your findings and fear of falling with your doctor or healthcare professional – ask for help to make your home safer
- Organize: Remove, eliminate and minimize hazards and risks
- Plan of action: Put your safety plan in action!
Exercise
Regular exercise is critical. Why not try Tai Chi? It’s a simple exercise designed to strengthen leg muscles and improve balance. Also, consult a physiotherapist or your health care professional on safe exercises specific to you.
An exercise to improve strength and balance:
- Sit in a sturdy firm chair with armrests
- Stand up slowly, pushing off the armrests if needed
- Pause and get your balance. Be sure you are standing up straight.
- Slowly sit back down into the chair.
- Relax and then repeat.
